“It would seem that sea bathing taken by Mr Eherenberg (second housemaster on Foundation and also a maths master), were not without incident. It was difficult to get someone to take sea bathing as it was quite a responsibility to supervise the boys and also to swim with them.

It was not on the session mentioned by Buchanan, but on another with Mr Eherenberg, that the following incident happened. There were about fifteen of us and I remember the waves were quite big when we entered the water, to the right of the beach near the old swimming pool. It was quite windy and swimming out was exciting as we breasted the waves. However it soon became obvious a strong current was taking us further out.

Mr Eherenberg shouted to everyone to swim their hardest for the shore and I saw he was towing a boy in the rescue position, who had apparently been struck by some floating debris. Swimming back was very difficult as you had to hold your breath as the waves crashed over you. He brought the boy safely to shore, all the while encouraging us all to battle against the waves.
Without a doubt that boy owes his life to Mr Eherenberg, I will not mention his name as he may not wish it to be known.”
